A Tale Of Two Cities - Charles Dickens

"It was the best of times; it was the worst of times." How well it describes our own times!

Charles Dickens was a timeless writer and I believe his messages will live for many more generations to come. For human nature has very little space for common sense and so we face the same social problems again and again because we lack the capacity to learn from history.

Growing Cyber Security Challenges

The AIIMS, New Delhi – the country’s premier health institute – has been forced back in time after a major cyberattack took all of its servers offline.Experts worry that this cyberattack could’ve compromised the data of the large number of patients. The crucial data includimg personal credentials of patients, lab reports, medical history & health records etc. – is now at risk of being sold on the dark web. While all efforts are being made to restore the servers at AIIMS, it has led to huge concerns over cybersecurity – the most vital being on how prepared are we to tackle such growing challenges?

Flash of Genius. Story of an Inventor -Modern wiper technology

How Robert Kearns Took on Ford and Chrysler and Won

Robert Kearns invented and patented the intermittent windshield wiper only to see his invention show up in Ford, Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz cars. Then he got mad.

The story of the lone inventor has shaped our understanding of the industrial revolution and the information age. We've all heard the stories of Thomas Edison working tirelessly to perfect his light bulb, and Steve Wozniak pouring over schematics to create the Apple computer.

We also know the fame and fortune these inventors have received as a result of their hard work and ingenuity. But, what happens when an inventor creates a useful invention, patents it, and tries to sell it, only to see his invention stolen by the very companies he tried to sell it to?

In 1953, newly graduated mechanical engineer Robert William Kearns and his new wife Phyllis, were on their honeymoon in Ontario, Canada. During a celebration, a champagne bottle was opened, and its cork flew across the room, striking Kearns in the left eye. The accident caused Kearns to lose most of the vision in that eye.

During his recuperation, Kearn began thinking about the mechanics of the eye, and especially about the eyelid. An eyelid doesn't blink at a predetermined rate, but rather moves when the eye is dry or when a foreign object, such as dust, lands on the surface of the eye.

Kearns reasoned that the windshield wiper of a car should act like an eyelid, altering its wiping rate as the rain and road conditions changed.

Ten Years of Tinkering

For the next ten years, Kearns developed and refined his new intermittent windshield wiper concept. Building a laboratory in his basement, he constructed models using the dashboards of salvaged cars to test and refine his invention.

In 1963, Kearns retrofitted his intermittent windshield wiper onto a running Ford Galaxie convertible, and drove it to the Ford factory in Dearborn, Michigan. Ford was one of the "big three" automobile manufacturers, along with General Motors and Chrysler.

According to Kearns, the Ford managers he met with that day seemed interested in his invention, but were noncommittal. They did, however, call him in for a second meeting.

At this second meeting at Ford, Kearns was greeted by a phalanx of engineers, eager to question him on his intermittent windshield wiper, and to show him, albeit at a distance, an intermittent windshield wiper system of their own. Ford was planning on installing intermittent windshield wipers in its Mercury line of cars.

Feeling a kinship with his fellow engineers, and thinking a deal with Ford was in the offing, Kearns revealed many of the inner workings of his wiper design to the Ford engineers.

Two Years Go By

For the next two years, Kearns met periodically with groups of Ford engineers to discuss intermittent wiper technology, but no offer was made to him to license his technology, or to partner with him in any way. Then, at the end of 1965, Ford stopped calling Robert Kearns altogether.

In 1969, the Ford Motor Company introduced the first electronic intermittent windshield wiper. Kearns, still believing that a deal with Ford was possible, and that Ford was acting in good faith, didn't question Ford's intentions until 1976.

A Shocking Discovery

Kearns spent the early 1970s working as an engineer at the U.S. National Bureau of Standards, and his intermittent windshield wiper was put on the back burner. Then, in 1976, Kearns' eldest son, Dennis Kearns, acquired an intermittent wiper control box used by Mercedes-Benz. Reverse engineering the Mercedes box, Kearns realized that the design was a literal copy of his patented invention.

Pouring over the patent filings from Ford, Volkswagen, Renault, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz and others, Kearns recognized that they had all simply copied and pasted several key elements of his design and incorporated them into their own patent filings.

Kearns was crushed and angry that companies he had admired his whole life were stealing from him without regard for his rights as the patent holder for the invention of the intermittent windshield wiper. Kearns described the companies' behavior as, "Bob Kearns doesn't count. He's nothing. He doesn't exist."

Kearns Fights Back

From 1977 onward, Kearns referred to his occupation as "litigant." He filed lawsuits against Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, and several European carmakers, including Mercedes-Benz.

As the legal cases worked their way through the courts, the stress on Kearns and his family mounted. He suffered a nervous breakdown and spent several weeks in a hospital. His long marriage to wife Phyllis ended.

The financial cost of taking on the auto giants weighed heavily on Kearns, and in several cases, he represented himself in court. This may have lead to the dismissal of a number of cases due to missed deadlines, and a lack of court-ordered filings being presented to the court.

And the Decision Is ...

Finally, in 1990, after more than a decade in the legal system, the Ford Motor Company agreed to settle with Robert Kearns for $10.2 million. In 1992, Kearns won a judgment against Chrysler for $30 million. Chrysler appealed the decision, but it was upheld when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Chrysler's appeal.

In 2005, Robert Kearns died of brain cancer. In 2008, Universal Pictures released the film "Flash of Genius," a retelling of Kearns' story that starred Greg Kinnear as Kearns.

PM Modi's speech at inauguration of 'Kartavya Path' in New Delhi

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated 'Kartavya Path' today. It symbolises a shift from erstwhile Rajpath being an icon of power, to Kartavya Path being an example of public ownership and empowerment. The Prime Minister also unveiled the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate on occasion. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that in the time of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav the nation felt a new inspiration and energy today. “Today, we are filling the picture of tomorrow with new colours, leaving behind the past. Today this new aura is visible everywhere, it is the aura of confidence of New India”, he said. He continued “Kingsway i.e. Rajpath, the symbol of slavery, has become a matter of history from today and has been erased forever. Today a new history has been created in the form of ‘Kartavya Path’. I congratulate all the countrymen for their freedom from yet another identity of slavery, in this Amrit Kaal of independence.” The Prime Minister said that today a huge statue of our national hero Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose has also been installed near India Gate. “At the time of slavery, there was a statue of the representative of the British Raj. Today the country has also brought to life a modern, strong India by establishing the statue of Netaji at the same place”, he added. Recalling the greatness of Netaji, the Prime Minister said “Subhas Chandra Bose was such a great man who was beyond the challenge of position and resources. His acceptance was such that the whole world considered him a leader. He had courage and self-respect. He had ideas, he had visions. He had leadership abilities and had policies.” He said that no country should forget its glorious past. India’s glorious history is in every Indian’s blood and tradition. Netaji, the Prime Minister reminded, was proud of India’s heritage and at the same time, he wanted to make India modern. “If after independence India had followed the path of Subhash Babu, what heights would the country be at today! But unfortunately, this great hero of ours was forgotten after independence. His ideas, even the symbols associated with them, were ignored”, the Prime Minister lamented. He recalled the visit to Netaji’s residence in Kolkata on the occasion of Netaji’s 125th birth anniversary and remembered the energy that he felt at that time. “It is our effort that Netaji’s energy should guide the country today. Netaji’s statue on the ‘Kartavya Path’ will become a medium for that'', he said. The Prime Minister said “In the last eight years, we have taken many such decisions one after the other, which are imprinted with the ideals and dreams of Netaji. Netaji Subhash was the first head of Akhand Bharat, who freed Andaman before 1947 and hoisted the Tricolour. At that time he had imagined what it would be like to hoist the Tricolour at the Red Fort. I personally experienced this feeling, when I had the privilege of hoisting the Tricolour at the Red Fort on the occasion of 75 years of the Azad Hind government.” He also talked about the museum dedicated to Netaji and the Azad Hind Fauz in the Red Fort. He also remembered the Republic Day Parade in 2019 when a contingent of Azad Hind Fauz also marched, a long-awaited honour for the veterans. Similarly, the identity and their association in the Andaman Islands were also strengthened.

Nandan Nilekani - Future of Digital Commerce with ONDC

Shri Nandan Nilekani addresses the Startup India Innovation Week and talks about India's journey of transformation and the Future of Digital Commerce with the Open Network For Digital Commerce.

ONDC – Transforming Digital Commerce in India

What is ONDC?

Open Network for Digital Commerce or ONDC is India’s alternative to the global giants like Walmart and Amazon. It is a government, non-profit initiative that will promote the use of open networks for e-commerce activities. Technically, it is a protocol that will need to be adopted by technology companies that support MSMEs.

It will curb digital monopolies and standardize the onboarding of retailers on digital e-commerce platforms.

Features of ONDC

- Non-exclusive, non-rivalrous public infrastructure

- Open network

- Voluntary and flexible adoption

- Equal access

What does ONDC Want to Achieve?

Just like UPI changed payment in India, ONDC will transform the e-commerce experience for sellers and consumers.

- ‘Democratize’ digital commerce and move it away from platform-centric models like Walmart, Flipkart, and Amazon.

- Ending monopolies of Amazons and Flipkarts of the e-commerce industry.

- Inclusivity and access for SMEs and MSMEs.

- Empower consumers with more choices.

- Enable more sellers to be on digital platforms.

- Transactions will go through an open network.

- Breakaway from the existing silos by empowering merchants and consumers.

India's GDP Growth Will Be More Constrained Next Year

The lagging impact of monetary policy actions and interest rate hikes, both across the world and in India, are going to hit India's GDP growth in 2023, cautions Dharmakirti Joshi, chief economist at rating agency CRISIL

India's latest gross domestic product (GDP) numbers indicate 13.5% growth during the April to June 2022 quarter. How does this compare with GDP growth in previous years, particularly before and after the Covid-19 pandemic disruption?

To help us understand the new GDP numbers in this context, LISTEN Dharmakirti Joshi, chief economist at rating agency CRISIL.

India's Economic Growth

In this episode of the Perspective Prog. Based on 'India's Economic Growth'. India’s economy grew 13.5 per cent in the April-June quarter of this fiscal. This was led by higher household consumption, especially of contact-intensive services, and buoyant investment activity. The corresponding April to June quarter of last year had recorded a GDP growth of 20.1% and an 18.1% uptick in GVA amid the second wave of COVID-19 Pandemic. GVA from agriculture, forestry and fishing rose 4.5% in the April to June quarter of this year, while manufacturing and mining grew at 4.8% and 6.5%, respectively. While the share of Government Final Consumption Expenditure in GDP moderated to 11.2% between this April and June, from 12.6% last year, GDP growth was boosted by private final consumption expenditure which surged to 59.9% of GDP from 54% in Q1 of 2021-22. The share of Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) which reflects capital investments in the economy improved to 34.7% of GDP in Q1 this year from 32. 8% in the corresponding period last year. The Reserve Bank of India had estimated 16.2 percent growth for the first quarter and 7.2 percent for the current fiscal year. So what do these figures for economic growth in the first quarter indicate and what lies ahead for the Indian economy? Saving FOREST, Why the Urgency? Nature And You

Forests are referred to as the lungs of the Earth. These absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen into the atmosphere which we take in while breathing and later it is used for respiration and other processes by our body. The importance of forests cannot be underestimated. We depend on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Besides providing habitats for animals and livelihoods for humans, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change. They play a vital role in maintaining the clouds and in turn the rainfall pattern, humidity, climate stability, and air quality.

How to link voter ID with Aadhaar card: a step by step guide

How to link voter ID with Aadhaar card: a step by step guide

As per the ECI, the aim of the exercise is to establish the identity of electors and authenticate entries in the electoral roll.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a drive to link voter identity cards with Aadhaar cards.

As per the ECI, the aim of the exercise is to establish the identity of electors and authenticate entries in the electoral roll as well as to identify if the same person is registered in more than one constituency or more than once in the same constituency.

For linking the Aadhaar card with the EPIC online via mobile, the ECI has shared the following steps.

The EPIC cardholder has to first download and install Voter Helpline App either from Google Play Store (Android users) or App store (iPhone users).

After the installation is complete, open Voter Helpline App and click on “I agree” and then “Next”. Among the options which appear, click on the first option “Voter Registration”, and then select “Electoral Authentication Form (Form6B)” and “Lets Start”.

Now, enter your mobile number and click on “send OTP”. Enter the OTP shared on the mobile number and then click on “Verify”.

After this, select the first option “Yes I have voter ID” and then click “Next”. Now enter the “Voter ID (EPIC)” number, select the “State” and then click on “Fetch details” and “Proceed”.

Enter details shown on the screen and then click on “Next”. Now, enter “Aadhaar Number”, “Mobile number”, “Place of Application” and then click “done”Form 6B Preview page will be displayed.

Check details and click on “Confirm” for the final submission of Form-6B. After final confirmation Form 6B’s reference number will be received.

Form-6B is for voters to share their Aadhaar number with the ECI. It is also available online at nvsp.in.

The move from the ECI to link voter ID with Aadhaar comes against the backdrop of The Election Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021, which was passed in Parliament in December last year.

The Act amends the Representation of the People Act, for allowing the linking of voter IDs with Aadhaar on a voluntary basis, “for the purposes of authentication of entries in the electoral roll.”
