Batenge toh Katenge

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has publicly endorsed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditya.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has publicly endorsed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's slogan, "Batenge toh Katenge," which translates to "If we divide, we will be cut." This endorsement emphasizes the need for Hindu unity, particularly highlighted in the context of the upcoming political season and in response to concerns over Hindu persecution in places like Bangladesh. Here's a breakdown of the situation based on recent reports:

- **Endorsement Details**: The RSS, through its General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, has explicitly supported Yogi Adityanath's statement, indicating that unity among Hindus is crucial for national interest and public welfare. This support comes not just for the slogan itself but for the spirit behind it, aiming to consolidate Hindu society against perceived threats of division, especially along caste lines.

- **Context of the Slogan**: Yogi Adityanath first articulated this slogan in the context of alleged Hindu persecution post a regime change in Bangladesh. The slogan has since been interpreted as a call for unity among Hindus, suggesting that division would lead to their detriment.

- **Political Implications**: This move by the RSS can be seen in the broader context of Indian politics where there's an ongoing narrative around Hindu unity, especially with elections on the horizon in states like Maharashtra. The endorsement might be aimed at countering what some within the BJP and RSS perceive as minority consolidation against them.

- **Public Reaction and Media Coverage**: Various posts and news articles have highlighted this endorsement as a significant move, with users and commentators discussing its implications for Hindu consolidation and its impact on upcoming elections. The RSS's position has been described as a strategic move to galvanize Hindu voters by emphasizing unity.

- **RSS's Broader Ideology**: This endorsement aligns with the RSS's long-standing ideology of promoting Hindu nationalism and unity, which is often seen as an attempt to counter what they perceive as threats to Hindu culture and identity.

This development reflects a strategic political and social messaging aimed at rallying support among Hindu communities, emphasizing unity as a form of strength against various perceived threats, whether social, political, or cultural.

Hindu unity essential

“There is an old saying about unity which goes like this: Jab jab Hindu bhaav ko bhoole aaye vipad mahan; bhai toote, shakti khoye, mite dharm sansthaan. (Whenever Hindus have forgotten the spirit of the religion, troubles will come; brotherhood will be broken, power will be lost, faith and culture will be destroyed.) The spirit of this is that Hindu society should remain united. If we get divided on the basis of caste, creed, religion...then we will be slaughtered,”

Bengaluru building collapse

Several feared trapped, rescue operation underway

Six of the at least 16 labourers feared trapped in the building collapse in Bengaluru have been rescued so far while one died.

On Tuesday, 22 October, as incessant rain continued, an under-construction building near Hennur collapsed. Several people are feared trapped inside. Bengaluru has received heavy rain since Monday, 21 October, under the influence of a cyclonic circulation formed over central Andaman.

An under-construction multi-storey building in Babusapalya near Hennur came crashing down. At least 16 labourers are feared trapped under the debris. One of them, reportedly, managed to escape after the collapse despite sustaining injuries.

Local authorities, police and emergency response personnel have arrived at the scene and a rescue operation is underway. So far, six have been rescued from the debris.

Heavy rain across Karnataka

IMD had predicted that Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh may receive heavy rains and thunderstorms for three days from 21 October under the influence of the cyclonic circulation.

Since 21 October, rains have been battering many parts of Karnataka, mainly affecting Shivamogga and Bengaluru. Shivamogga has experienced severe flooding due to heavy rainfall.

The rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, has affected low-lying regions, causing stormwater drains and channels to overflow into streets and homes.

What caused the collapse?

Hennur police officials said that the building seem to have collapsed due to a breakdown of scaffolding.

“The collapse occurred around 4.30 pm, and 12 to 15 labourers appear to be trapped inside. The under-construction building consisted of five floors. One person has succumbed so far.”

Of the people trapped inside, six have been rescued so far. The official said, “Six people have been rescued and the rescue operation is still underway. Around four to six more people are expected to trapped inside the building. The injured people have been rushed to the local hospitals for further medical care.”

The injured labourers were mostly from Tamil Nadu and Odisha. “Identity of the victim and the people trapped inside are yet to be ascertained,” the official added.

Infrastructure Projects Disrupting Water Supply in coimbatore

Based on information available up to October 3, 2024, there have been reports and discussions on social media indicating that residents in Coimbatore have faced issues with water supply due to various infrastructure projects, including gas pipeline work. Here's how these issues generally interconnect:

1. Infrastructure Projects Disrupting Water Supply: Large-scale infrastructure projects, like laying gas pipelines, often require digging or altering the urban landscape, which can inadvertently affect water supply lines. This might be due to direct damage to water pipes during construction or because of the need to reroute or temporarily shut off water supplies to facilitate the work.

2. Poor Coordination Among Government Departments: The lack of coordination between different government departments or between contractors and local utilities can lead to scenarios where one project (like gas pipeline installation) disrupts another service (like water supply). This is a common challenge in urban management where multiple utilities and services are interdependent.

3. Public Grievances: Residents have expressed frustration over these disruptions on social platforms. For instance, it reflect sentiments of inconvenience due to water shortages or contaminated water supply, which can result from such construction activities if not managed properly.

4. Historical Context in Coimbatore: There have been projects aimed at improving water supply in Coimbatore, like the 24x7 water supply initiative. However, these projects themselves or related infrastructure works like gas pipelines can temporarily or even permanently affect water service if not integrated well with existing systems.

5. Mitigation Efforts: Typically, after such issues become public or are reported, there might be an increased effort by the local government or corporations to address the coordination gap. This could involve stricter oversight of construction schedules, better planning to minimize utility disruptions, or quicker response teams to fix issues as they arise.

The situation in Coimbatore reflects a broader urban challenge where modernizing one aspect of city infrastructure (like energy supply through gas pipelines) can conflict with another essential service (water supply) due to logistical and administrative overlaps. Public feedback, often voiced through social media, highlights the need for better-integrated urban planning and inter-departmental coordination to minimize such disturbances in the future.

Innovation vs Invention

The terms “invention” and “innovation” are frequently used interchangeably, which is not only incorrect but also overlooks important nuances in meaning that can significantly impact a conversation. Invention involves the discovery of something new, while innovation entails the utilization of a novel idea or method.

Innovation is the act of introducing fresh concepts or approaches to the market and transforming existing inventions into practical products or processes that have real-world utility. Some believe that a successful entrepreneurial journey starts with an invention, and the rest is mere “execution”. However, this perspective overlooks the risks and significant differences involved. In this comparison of innovation vs. invention, we aim to highlight and clarify these distinctions.

**Innovation** and **invention** are often used interchangeably in casual conversation, but they denote different concepts in the context of technology, business, and product development:

### **Invention:**

- **Definition**: Invention refers to the creation of a new product or introducing a process for the first time. It's about making something that did not exist before.

- **Characteristics**:

  - Often involves a scientific or technological breakthrough.

  - It's the first step in the development of a product or a new way of doing something.

  - An invention might exist only in patent form or as a prototype without being commercialized.

- **Example**:

  - The telephone by Alexander Graham Bell is an invention. It introduced a new device that allowed for voice communication over distances.

What is Innovation?

The term “innovation” originates from the Latin verb “innovāre”, which means introducing new things, ideas, or ways of doing something. Unlike improvement or transformation, innovation involves doing something entirely different from what is already being done, rather than just doing it better.

Innovation has permeated various domains of life, leading to diverse applications in business, politics, society, and science. Its expansive nature reflects the potential for innovation in all areas of life.

### **Innovation:**

- **Definition**: Innovation involves improving, adapting, or implementing a new way of using an existing product, idea, or process. It doesn't have to be entirely new; it can be an incremental change or a novel application of something known.

- **Characteristics**:

  - Can be about how something is made, sold, used, or delivered.

  - Often focused on adding value or solving a problem in a new way.

  - Involves commercialization or application; it's about taking an invention to the market or making it useful in a new context.

- **Example**:

  - The smartphone is an innovation. While it encompasses many inventions (like touchscreens, mobile internet, GPS), its innovation lies in combining these technologies into one versatile device that changed how people interact with technology daily.

### **Key Differences:**

- **Novelty**: Invention is about novelty in its purest form — creating something entirely new. Innovation might not be entirely new but introduces a new value or application.

- **Scope**:

  - An invention might remain an idea or a patent if it's not turned into something practical or marketable.

  - Innovation must impact the market or society; it's about practical application and often about commercial success or widespread adoption.

- **Process**:

  - Invention can be a singular event or discovery.

  - Innovation is often an ongoing process that includes iterations, improvements, and adaptations.

- **Impact**:

  - While inventions can change the world, they do so through innovation. Innovation is what often leads to widespread change or economic impact by making inventions accessible or more useful.

### **Interplay Between the Two:**

Innovation can follow invention, where an invention is taken, improved upon, and brought to market or used in ways not initially conceived by the inventor. Conversely, the process of innovating might lead to new inventions as further breakthroughs occur while trying to solve practical or market-driven problems.

Understanding these differences helps in appreciating the roles both play in economic growth, technological advancement, and societal change.
